Six things that should stop you sending money.
Puppy fraud is a large and organised business, and it works because people fall in love with a photograph before they have checked anything. Every one of these is a reason to walk away — including from a listing on our own marketplace.
They will not video call you
There is no good reason. Every honest breeder on a modern phone can show you a puppy walking across a kitchen floor. This is the single most reliable test there is.
They want payment by wire, gift card or a payment app
Untraceable and unrecoverable, which is exactly why it is asked for. A real breeder will take a normal payment with a record attached to it.
The price is well below everyone else
Health testing, good food and veterinary care cost what they cost. A purebred puppy at a third of the going rate is either not what it is described as, or does not exist.
They introduce their own shipping company
A very common scam: after the deposit, a courier asks for money for a crate, insurance or vaccinations. Arrange transport yourself, or through the platform.
The photographs appear elsewhere online
Run a reverse image search on any photograph before you send money. Stolen litter photographs are the backbone of puppy fraud.
They are pushing you to decide today
Urgency is a sales tactic and a fraud tactic. A breeder who has raised a litter properly would rather wait a week than place a puppy badly.
How do I know a breeder is legitimate?+
Insist on a live video call with the puppy, ask to see health testing for both parents, ask how many litters they produce a year, and check that photographs are not appearing elsewhere online. How much is a deposit to reserve a puppy?+
$500, the same on every listing. It takes the puppy off the market so nobody else can reserve it, and it comes off the total price — you pay the balance to the breeder at pickup.
Is my money protected?+
The balance is. The deposit settles to the breeder because it compensates them for holding the puppy for you, but the remaining balance is held until you confirm the hand-off in the app, and it releases then. If something goes wrong, you can file a claim and it is decided with the record of what happened attached.
What questions should I ask a breeder?+
What health testing have the parents had, and can I see the results? How many litters does the dam have a year? Can I see where the puppies are raised? What are you feeding them? What is in your contract if the vet check finds something? Will you take the dog back at any point in its life? That last question is the one good breeders answer instantly.
Can I meet the puppy in person before reserving?+
Where distance allows, yes, and any breeder worth buying from will welcome it. When you are several states away, the video call is what replaces it — which is why it is built into the listing rather than left for you to arrange.
